Roberts radio were established in 1932 by Harry Roberts and his associate Leslie Bidmead in London UK. In 1935 Roberts Radios were being produced in numbers exceeding 8 radios per week by the company. The radios at that time were of the suitcase design coming with a loudspeaker and inside of the lid of the radio, a frame aerial.

It was in 1937 that Roberts Radios launched the popular M4Q Roberts Radio which was a change of design and look for the company’s radio products at the time. The Roberts M4Q Radio took up considerably less space than that of its suitcase model predecessors and was comparatively much cheaper to build due to its new “compact” size. The normal price for the radios fell from 11gns to then 9gns. With the new price, growing popularity of their products and with help of the new radio range, Roberts Radio became a PLC (Private Limited Company) on 23rd April 1937.

In 1941 the company moved location to East Molesey in Surrey. London had become a dangerous place to stay and work due to the war and the bombings at the time. It was throughout the war years that the company’s founder, Harry Roberts received a telephone call from a friend of his who worked at the famous Harrods stores in London notifying him of the splendid news that Her Majesty the Queen of England had paid for a Roberts Radio for her own personal use. To his surprise this was the second Roberts radio Her Majesty had bought, the first Roberts Radio that she purchased was a gift for Princess Elizabeth.

It became evident that the Royal Warrant was no simple formality when in 1957 Harry Robert was asked to Buckingham Palace in order to take sample models of the current range of portable radios from their shop for a display to both Prince Charles and Princess Anne. An additional two Royal Warrants were given to the Roberts Radio company in both 1982 and 1985.

To this day Roberts Radio continue to build the same high class hand-made radios that they have become famous for in a new factory located in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, England, UK. Their range now includes a variety of different styles, models and types of radios including the Roberts Robi ipod DAB radio, Roberts Sound 23 Dab CD System, Roberts WM201 WiFi Internet Radio and the special edition Roberts Radio Cath Kidston Rose Limited Edition Pause Plus Radio.
